To be the best we can be

Year 5 with Mr Hornsby, Mrs Everett and Mrs Thornley

Welcome to Year 5. Alongside our usual lessons, we have some exciting things planned this year starting with the National Nutcracker Competition and our chance to win a visit to Covent Garden (or Scunthorpe!) depending on how well we do. We will be going to the Young Voices Concert in Sheffield Arena in January and we also have our visits to PGL and our overnight visit to the Deep later in the year to look forward to.

Here are some things you need to know about being in Y5 this term.

You will need to bring to school your Home-School Diary, reading book, spelling book and author's journal to school every day inside your Home-School folder. You will not need to bring pencils, rubbers or any other stationery as this will all be provided.

We have Games on a Wednesday (with Mr Wright) and Dance on a Friday. Make sure you have the correct PE kit in school for these two days. We may have to change days some weeks, so it is better to have your kit in school every day just in case. Remember, you cannot wear any jewellery, including ear-rings for PE and please have something to tie back your hair with if it is long.

You can bring a snack for break times but please don't keep this with your lunch as you can't go in your lunch box at playtime. You can bring a bottle of water for playtime if you wish, but remember you have a water bottle that stays in school all the time that you can use with the water fountain.

You will also need an apron or an old shirt for cookery on a Wednesday.

Home-learning

Each week you will be asked to:

  • Read your reading book or Bug Club book and note the page numbers and any comments in your diary at least three times a week. Where possible, one of these should be done with an adult.
  • Practise your times-tables and other basic number skills as often as possible to help with instant recall.
  • Practise your spellings every week night and at least once over the weekend for up to five minutes a time.
  • Vocabulary extension work – finding out the meaning of words used in school or found in own reading.

Other home-learning may include:

  • A maths activity either on paper or on-line.
  • Research activities based around other subjects such as History or Science. These may occasionally involve extended pieces of work.
  • Bug Club grammar and spelling games.
